烧饼 (Shāo Bǐng) – these little baked wonders in the world of Chinese pastries. We went to Lao Ge Shao Bing 来个烧饼  for their infamous Shao Bing – Imagine something flaky, layered, and kinda bread-like, sorta like puff pastry’s cousin. It was nothing like that! We grabbed one with a scrumptious filling that had my taste buds doing the happy dance, but gotta be honest, the pastry itself was a bit on the stiff side. Sad…

The letdown that occurs when you anticipate a certain texture, only to find that it falls short of your expectations.

We went after our Donkey Burger, it was around 15 mins away – Lao Ge Shao Bing 来个烧饼, tucked away in another cozy Hutong – this time, no street-side eating required (thank goodness, because it was seriously like 40C out there, and I was melting faster than ice cream on a hot sauna). The spot’s on the smaller side, a little dodge, but guess what? No need to join a queue. Turnaround’s pretty quick, so that’s good.

Now, if you’re into flavours that are a bit more daring – by daring, I mean gamey – don’t miss out on the lamb offal soup. It’s got that distinctive lamb flair that I personally love. But heads-up, my friend found it a bit too much on the bold side. I mean, my taste buds are more primitive, I enjoy gamey and stronger flavours and so did my friend; but not hard to imagine it might be too strong for a lot of people. Honestly tho, adding some noods in there would’ve taken it from 7 to 7.5. Just saying!
