Recommended by a friend, I decided to give Som Tam Jay So a try. I visited around 5 pm, and it became clear that Som Tam Jay So was ready to close soon, as several items I had in mind were already unavailable.

Walking into Som Tam Jay So, the absence of air conditioning hit me like a wall. I've never been one to handle heat well, and on this particular day, the temperature was killing me. I was literally sweating balls.

When I arrived, there was no queue, and the restaurant appeared nearly empty. A friendly lady promptly invited me to choose any available seat. As I settled in and prepared to place my order, I found myself engaged in conversation with one of the waiters, who turned out to be extra friendly. He casually mentioned that he moonlights at a gay bar on the weekends and extended an invitation for me to visit haha

Despite the language barrier, I managed to order my dishes, selecting a dried shrimp and blue crab salad, a side of corn kernels, a spicy duck salad, and some grilled chicken wings. However, I must admit that the combination of intense spiciness and the absence of climate control in the restaurant made the experience quite challenging for me.

Honestly, the food was not bad. Still, during my single visit, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t significantly better to the options you’d find in Kowloon City, of all places, believe it or not! My friend, though, insists that I should give it another shot, visit during earlier hours, and explore different dishes – perhaps during the cooler months. Apparently, Som Tam Jay So is renowned for its Isaan food, and I might have missed out on some of their best offerings.
