I initially visited Taiwai Dining Room 大圍小館 for dinner, and honestly, it was way too hyped up. But then a friend suggested I give their dim sum a try, so I decided to take a chance. And whoa! Let me tell you, Taiwai Dining Room 大圍小館 has quickly become one of my go-to dim sum spots in the New Territories.

Chow's tip: Steer clear of the Cha Siu — it's a letdown.

When it comes to local places like this, the ordering game can be a bit tricky. Their dim sum tends to pack a punch in terms of flavour, so here’s what you gotta go for:

流心煎糯米雞 – The friend glutinous rice with chicken and melted egg yolk is an absolute game-changer.

蘿蔔糕 – Their steamed radish cake is also a winner, seriously delicious.

腐皮夾 – You’ve got to try the 9 layers of tofu and shrimp paste with dried shrimp roe. It’s super tasty.

豬心 Sichuan Style Fry Pork’s Heart – If you’re up for some heat, go for the Sichuan-style fried pork’s heart.

奶黃包 Custard Egg Yolks Bun – Trust me, it’s always a winner.

陳皮豆沙鍋餅 Chenpi (Sun-Dried Mandarin Orange Peel) Red Bean Paste Cake – They’ve managed to strike a perfect balance between the orange peel and red bean paste in this fried delight. Seriously yumz.

Some of the other items are decent but don’t exactly stand out.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip for avoiding the queue. They claim they don’t take reservations for lunch, and their phone line is nearly impossible to connect with. What worked for me? I visited for dinner first, got friendly with the servers, and they hooked me up with a direct booking for the next time. Skipping the line like a pro! And if you talk like a local, you’ll find that it opens doors in the Hong Kong dining scene. True story!
